This book is so well written but in a style typical of Shirley Jackson. It's not overly long, and the only weakness (in my opinion) is that, unlike the film, it is not really conclusive as to whether Hill House is actually haunted or if it is simply that Eleanor has a susceptible mind to the house itself for which she develops a clear and uncompromising obsession...
