Vampires of
Color
Considering how little there has been written in the areas of queer vampires,
a surprisingly significant amount of it has been devoted to people of color.
This is surprising, considering that within the vampire genre itself, vampire
movies starring African-Americans are limited at best. Even within the movie
'Blacula', the blaxploitation granddaddy of
all vampire movies, has an interracial queer male couple that get converted
into vampires. But, the trend of mainstream movies having queer African-American
vampires does pretty much end there. 'Blade' doesn't find the man of his dreams,
nor does Eddie Murphy quell his heterosexual lusts for even a second in 'Vampire
in Brooklyn'. So, those of you interested in the bloodthirsty, black and queer
may not be able to head to your local video store and pick up a dozen movies,
but there are a few items out there of interest.
- 'Blacula', as I mentioned, contains an interracial
gay couple that get turned into vampires. Sadly, the two are extremely stereotypical,
and, of course, get killed (or at least made undead). But, considering that
the number of vampire movies that have gay male characters can still be counted
on one hand, it is still significant.
- 'The Mark of Lilith' is a short movie about
a black lesbian who meets a white, bisexual vampire while researching monstrous
women. Sadly, I have not seen this movie yet so I can say little about it
(it's priced quite a bit out of my price range).
- 'Night Boys' is a gay porn that seems to
star a black count Dracula putting the bite on young nubile males. I haven't
seen this one either, but more because I haven't gotten around to it.
- 'Dragula, Queen of Darkness' is a hard to
come by transsexual porn in which she-male vampires get it on with their male
sex partners. Two of the four she-males within this porn are African-American.
- 'The Gilda Stories' by Jewelle Gomez is a
story of a runaway slave girl in 1890 who meets up with two lesbian vampires.
The book follows the course of 200 years of her life starting shortly before
her conversion into a vampire, and ending far in the future. It is a good
book and one of the few that deal with a non-Caucasian interracial couple
(Gilda falls in love with Bird, an American Indian vampire).
- Believe it or not, a lesbian African-American vampire dance has already
been made. 'Bones & Ashes' by the Urban Bushwomen is based on 'The
Gilda Stories' by Jewelle Gomez.
- 'Le Viol de Vampire' - A movie by Jean Rollins may have a black lesbian
vampire in it, but is still unconfirmed.
- 'Flow' is a movie created by Asian-American
director Quentin Lee. It consists of four stories, one of which is about a
gay vampire couple called 'Key in the Heart'. Very surrealistic, it is the
only gay Asian vampire film I am aware of.
